This cross was inspired by a Southwestern Pueblo Indian Cross that James Avery saw in a store in downtown Denver, Colorado. He admired its strength and simplicity. At this time, he was teaching at the University of Colorado in Boulder, and together with his students, he started to explore jewelry-making. Soon after creating this first cross, he started making crosses for others who noted the strength of design evident in his work. “Then I was, as I am now, personally convinced that the cross is, for all people, the symbol of truth, hope, goodness, and life everlasting.”
